Note
If you use GIMP version two, the threshold and color levels tool are located under "Layer > Colors", not "Image > Colors" as the tutorial says.
Changing the Background
If you want to change the background color of your scan, select the scan layer. Then use the Color to Alpha filter (Filters > Colors > Color to Alpha) to get rid of the background color. Finally, insert a layer below your scan and put whatever you want to have in the background in this new layer.
