    It's an interesting tutorial, but I can't figure out what to do with the tape layers and what order they should be merged down. They're lightly transparent before merging but then they either turn solid white or disappear altogether.

    I downloaded your xcf file of the tutorial and the tape had the same problems. Merging the tape ruins it. It either becomes solid white or disappears.

    By changing the layer mode back to soft light, your problem should be fixed. This happens when you merge the layers, it's changed back to normal; you simply have to re-apply the layer mode to regain the transparency.
